Continue where you left off
The AI keeps its progress in a file inside your package folder, PROGRESS.md: the step it's on, what's done, and what's waiting on you. So each time, start a new session in the same folder and type continue.
Why a new session each time
A new session reads the progress file first, so it knows exactly where things stand, even weeks later. You can reopen an old session from Claude's sidebar too, but the progress file is what the AI goes by.
Steps
Step 1: Open Claude and click Code
- Codex
- Open ChatGPT and choose Codex from the menu at the top.
You should see: The message box, with your past sessions in the sidebar.
Step 2: Start a new session
Click + New in the sidebar.
- Mac
- Or press Command-N.
- Windows
- Or press Ctrl+N.
- Codex
- Click your package's project in the sidebar, then New chat.
You should see: An empty message box.
Step 3: Pick the same package folder
In the controls under the message box, choose Local and your package folder. Claude lists the folders you used recently. If yours isn't there, choose Open folder… and find it.
- Codex
- Nothing to pick: the project keeps its folder. Check that Work in says This computer.
You should see: Your package folder's name in the folder control.
If it looks different: Moved or renamed the folder? That's fine: choose it where it is now. It's the one with
PROGRESS.mdinside.Step 4: Type
continueand press EnterYou should see: The AI tells you where you left off and what comes next, then carries on.
If it looks different: If it starts over or asks what to build, it can't see the progress file. Check that you opened the package folder.
Step 5: If you reach your usage limit, wait for it to reset
Claude says
You've hit your session limitwith the time it resets. Tick Auto-continue when limits reset to have it carry on by itself, or come back after that time and typecontinue.- Codex
- Codex says when your limit resets. Come back after that time and type
continue.
You should see: The AI picking up where it stopped, after the reset time.
If it looks different: If Claude offers to buy extra usage, you can say no. Reaching the limit often? The Max plan ($100 a month) gives five times as much.
